This is the headcannon I was working on first, that would lead me to looking for official predator lore. Yes, it all started with the idea of Wolves catching fish...

The Wulver:

As the war in Foenum raged the wolves faced a schism, unnoticed by the ungulates. The wolves were taking losses, but would not back down, in the name of the Silver and Black Wolf they would persevere against the fodder that wished their extermination.

The known one were the Omega Wolves. The Black Wolf did not abide weakness of will or body, and wolves that saw a solution in parlay were unwelcome to the packs as the war raged. There were also doubts and fears on what these ungulates would do with their new dominion, after predators are unable to fight back against them. Those exiled would have a brighter future, but at the time they huddled together in hiding, praying that the ancient wolves would save them.

Only the Blue Wolf could answer their prayers...

Unknown, however, was a second faction, one that believed in fleeing Foenum. Their leader spoke of a meeting with the White Wolf, whom had told him the future that was to come. The would lose this war, and many of them will rejoin the trees. He asked the packless one for an answer, a way that the packs then their children could escape this fate...And the ancient wolf told him.

He was told of a place beyond The Darkwood, former home of the wolves. A labyrinth of forest that even the wolves had never mapped and the ungulates stayed far away from. Outside of it, the old wolves found what would be called Foenum, but now it seemed one could reach another exit to another land. One supposedly untouched by ungulates…

This plan was unpopular, to flee in cowardice to an unknown place. One that might not even exist. Even so, enough listened and steeled themselves for their journey. Even as all other wolves saw them as dead already…

The path through The Darkwood was perilous and confounding. Without sun and the reek of miasma from stagnant ponds, they trudged on. Some feared they might never leave, even as their leader told them he could see the White Wolf guiding them.

At last, they found a light beyond the treeline. Fresh warm and cool air met the wolves as they saw a land that somewhat puzzled them. A giant lake could be seen, and a shoreline that went from miles. They could not even tell if there was another shore beyond this “lake”.

They would call it The Land of Endless Water, and it would be their new home.

Even so, without ungulates to eat and only scattered vermin, there was now a worry they might starve in this strange place. It was then one wolf said he saw something in the water. A quick snap of their jaws and they pulled a still splashing fish from the waters.

The other wolves would realize that more fish than in any other lake they’d seen dwelt in these endless waters. All they needed was a way to catch them.

As the war in Foenum ended, these wolves made simple rafts. And in time they would have sturdy boats. As the Omegas found a home among the Sheep, these wolves fully settled in their home by the sea. No ungulate would dream of seeing wolves so devoted to woodworking.

Even so, old wolf traditions held. Every house, every boat, and every pier would have a name. The wolves came from the trees after all, and these wood structures were part of their community.

As time passed their bodies became leaner. They forgot the taste of mutton and beef, finding a new taste in the gifts from the sea. Between this and their new knowledge, they now saw themselves as no longer a simple tribe of wolves. They were now the Wulver, the wolves of the distant shore.

Still, other questions linger about the nature of this large expanses of water. Some wolves would dream of smooth stone cites so deep the sun never touches, and of creatures larger than any dragon gazing back at them. In time, they might have answers...

In retrospect, maybe I should have named The Darkwood something else. There's a indie horror title with that name. Any ideas? The Mirewood? The Shadowed Grove?

Main thing is it's a forest where little or no light gets through the canopy and it's easy to get lost there.
