Is there a reason Tianhuo can't go into fly by hitting up in midair? Neutral D feels a little awkward.

This probably isn't an answer but you can use fly while on the ground and more importantly, in your block string. Maybe that's why fly is designed that way otherwise the game won't be able to differentiate fly and a normal jump when you use a launcher/anti-air.

Disclaimer: i don't actually play Tian.

Well, it wouldn't be a problem on the ground since you can already cancel jump into fly, so 88 would be able to fly from the ground normally. It also wouldn't actually be a problem on launchers, since you can already either cancel into flight or a jump and would still be able to by inputting either 8 or 88. I see what you mean about blockstrings on other attacks, though, since you can cancel into fly at times when you can't cancel into a normal jump. I'd still like to be able to cancel into fly with 88, but I can at least understand a reason why it's on 5D now.

I don't think there's a reason for it other than it is just the way it is.

Some games you fly by pushing up in mid-air. Others you use 214K. In this one, it is D.

I haven't found it to be all that unintuitive (just push the buttom). I do occasionally still get a dive kick or something when I'm holding a direction, but that's just mechanical control, and it is almost moot at this point.
