Things you hate in games you love

We all have our favorites, games we love from beginning to end, games we can replay over and over, but they're not truly flawless.

These are the things in those games that flat out anger you, or a problem that many great games share. Stuff like difficulty spikes, cryptic layouts/solutions, save point starvation, that one level. Or it can be a specific song/characters/segment of an individual game.

Either way, these are the things that you probably don't look forward to on subsequent playthroughs.

Some of mine:

Great Bay Temple - Annoying layout, constantly repeating rooms, and the bosses are a pain. The music is kind of cool, but other than that, I never look forward to this dungeon, and I usually just ignore the stray fairies.

The second to last stage of Kirby: Triple Deluxe - Right before Queen Sectonia, this level goes on forever, it's so freaking tedious and I actually had to put the game down in the middle of the stage during my first playthrough.

Sonic 2 Special Stages - Control is pretty loose, take longer than they probably should, and they always take away all your rings when you exit them, regardless of how many you had during the stage.

Arc Rise Fantasia: First fight with Clyde...just watch:
2 words: Spread out

GTA IV - Hey NICOOOO! It's your COUSINNNN! Let's go bowling!

Metal Gear Solid 4 - everything is explained by nanomachines.

Uncharted 2 - That frigging stealth level and that boss fight with Lazeravic.

Skies of Arcadia - Those frigging random encounters!

Sonic Adventure 2 - that dang ring homing move doesn't always work.

This is exactly why I cannot bring myself to continue Majoras Mask on the 3DS. I'm right there, it's tedious.

Anyone ever play/heard of Zone of the Enders: the 2nd Runner? Amazing action game with probably the absolute WORST escort mission to be ever conceived in video game history. Ashley and EVA are nothing compared to this one. You're tasked with "escorting" the boss you are actively fighting, if she dies, you fail, if you die, you fail (obviously) the ONLY way to win is to parry her melee attacks with your melee attacks with a small window where if you're timing is a bit off one of you takes damage. She also loves to run and spam projectiles and if she feels like it, she can just kill herself, which by the time you react to her doing it, she just cut her own HP to half. Also once you get past that, you have to carry her disabled body straight up a purely vertical shaft.

A bit of an obscure one but Megasnark in Legendary Starfy (DS), actually I don't like this troupe in any media. He's only in two stages and in the second one you have to let him catch you to pregress through the story (in the first level it's optional, but you need to in order to get 100% on the stage) I had to lend the game to one of my friends (the cartridge has two save file slots on it) and have them clear the level on my save file for me (this process took three years, partially because of my degree causing me to either go strait to meeting my friend or outright forgetting to bring the game with me, not to mention the friend I was having help me lives fairly far away so we sometimes went for quite a while without meeting). Also you never fight Megasnark, even though it seems as if it would be the area's boss, so I don't even get to brutalise him for the frustration he caused

The way things leap out at you in Pikmin games, true I wasn't very old when the first two games were released but even now I hate being startled and some of the monsters just spring out of nowhere (there's one in Pikmin 2 that's a plant that pops out of the ground when you get too close)

Certain points of the Hamtaro games, they can be surprisingly difficult because of the Hamchat, a Hamster language/slang that expands what you can do along with your vocabulary. I love those games, Hamtaro and his friends are adorable and Ham-Ham Heartbreak is very much a feel good game as you travel around restoring love and friendship among other Hamsters....But some of the Hamchats are an absolute wicked witch to find (like the very last one for the sky garden in Ham Hams Unite) and there are a few points where you really need to do things in a certain order, but the game doesn't push you to do them in that order so you can end up getting stuck. In particular the Haunted House stage where there's one couple in the Beach stage you have to help before you go to a certain point or you end up getting stuck because they teach you a word you need to get past it and because your hamsters are separated it's impossible to leave the area and come back so you have to restart the whole thing because it autosaves whenever you leave a room....Also that there's only one combination of steps that you can win the highest lever hula contest with

Love me some FF6. Fantastic game. I just hate The Veldt with a pure passion. So much so that its pretty much the reason I never use Gau as a team member for practically anything. The Veldt is tied with Gau's ability to mimic enemies' moves after you "capture" their abilities when you get him to Leap at them. There are some really helpful and powerful abilities but because every enemy that you kill shows up on The Veldt, its impossible to reliably and consistently getting the enemy you want, leaving it up to the old Random Number Generator. Its a chore having to hunt down the enemy you want and ultimately not worth it. Thankfully its something you can skip but that basically makes it so Gau is never used for me as his power comes from the certain abilities you can copy.

I remember Mega Snark, he was quite the guide dang it moment. I figured it out just by guessing since I was in a dead end and I got curious as to what happened if he did get you after swimming back and forth for like 20 minutes. Though, since he had eaten one of the ship pieces, you had to get it out of him somehow, and he was a bit too big to fight directly.

Final Fantasy 7 - Why the :bark::bark::bark::bark: does Materia even HAVE a levelling system of it's own if the damn things take forever to level just once!?

Total Annihilation - Retarded :bark::bark::bark::bark:ing AI

MonTowers 2 - Ok, I get it. Free-to-play devs need to make money somehow but the :bark::bark::bark::bark:ing red outlined monsters are damn near impossible to catch.

Destiny - Gjallarhorn, not even the weapon itself but the hordes of rabid try-hard shitheads who overuse the damn thing.

Tales of Zestiria - Don't get me wrong, I'm ok with Rose but my favorite character in this title is Alisha and she's shoved to the back until the post-game DLC which is more of a consolation prize than anything.

Tales of Xillia - Not even the game itself, what is with everyone badmouthing Jude? He's smarter and more responsible than a LOT of Tales title heroes. Is it because he's so submissive? GET OVER IT!

Tales of Vesperia - Thanks for giving us the :bark::bark::bark::bark:ing beta while Japan gets the finished product B-N assholes.

Yu-Gi-Oh! - XYZs

I just don't like being freaked out when I'm trying to do something that's supposed to be fun (I've also noticed that the things that bother me rarely match up with what the average person is bothered by, for example I'm fine with the Pink Elephants scene in Dumbo) on that note another one where that's an issue is the very final level of Kirby Crystal Shards. I ended up discovering it on my own after experimenting to see what happens if you get all the shards and oddly what bothered me about 02 wasn't 02 itself or even the weird droplets (I've been told it's blood, but it never looked like that to me), it was the camera work and ambience; the way the camera moves in that level was always really unsettling to me, just to get there it does a weird swooping thing and then the barcode looking bit that runs in the background during the fight....It's really creepy

I also have a bit of a love-hate relationship with part of one movie game for similar reasons; I actually sort of enjoy movie games and this one had clips from the actual movie which was great because we didn't go see it until it had been in theaters for nearly 2 months and I really wanted to see it and it even had the clip of one of my favourite moments....and then it also dedicated an entire level to the scariest part of the movie (for me anyway). It isn't really the game's fault; it's a fairly long scene so it would make sense this would happen (especially since there was a level dedicated to a 1 minute long segment of movie earlier on and this part was about 7 minutes) and since I didn't deal well with the unexpected as a child it was good that I knew this scene was coming and was prepared for it, but when it first appeared....

A completely different one is how oddly some of the levels in Wallace & Gromit Project Zoo are set up, it took a while to find the signals you're supposed to hit to rescue the last Beaver, and the last Gorilla took ages to even find

The story of Kingdom Hearts post Kingdom Hearts II. Birth By Sleep was fine, but did we really need Xion to exist? Or did we really need anything in Coded? AND DID WE REALLY NEED TO INCLUDE TIME TRAVEL INTO THE MIX?

Another one that I recently remembered from NiGHTS Journey of Dreams. A lot of people didn't really like this game that much, and I can see why. I personally love the gameplay, aesthetics, and especially the music. The bosses area lot of fun, though a bit on the easy side...or at least all but one of them.

Behold, the witch Bobamba:
The boss of Crystal Castle, which is one of my favorite worlds of the game, and it's a sheer pain in the rear end. While some of the other bosses have luck involved in some way, this boss is so heavily luck-based that getting a good time is immensely frustrating. You have to tilt these cat things into holes on the board, but they have a habit of bouncing past them or just missing entirely, and the camera angle you have to work with doesn't help matters. The only redeeming qualities of this boss are its design/model quality (You can see every hair on those cat things, that's impressive for an early Wii title) and the music, which is my favorite boss theme in the game. Other than that though, this boss can go die in a cauldron of an unspeakable green potion.

I remember trying to play that game. I remember the controls were insanely difficult for me to work with and I couldn't handle it.

Dead Rising - the terrible friggin AI who will stop dead in their tracks to cry/attack random zombies if you don't spam the follow button continuously.

Fallout 4 - Perks. Really wish they'd kept skills instead. Now all my characters feel the same.

All Metal Gear Solids - Everything about the plot.

Bioshock Infinite - Vigors. Gameplay wise it was way more effective to just shoot things, and story wise they felt pretty shoehorned in.

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped -- The golden relic trials on Levels 13 (High Time) and 14 (Road Crash). For just being gold relics, these were a giant pain to get, especially compared to nearly every other gold relic in the game. "Do everything perfectly and one slight mis-step = start over" was typically reserved for earning platinum relics... but these... If I go back to 105% Crash Bandicoot again, I don't look forward to those ;__;

Tales of Symphonia -- The camera always follows Player 1 in battles. The AI aren't important, but it makes playing with friends impossible, since they can't even see themselves half the time.

Overwatch -- I don't really like fighting Reaper.

Pokemon Red -- The grind I had to do to be able to beat Gary after the 2nd town.

Destiny -- There's a random, rare glitch in which you will seemingly die for no reason, and the game's "Who killed you" will read either 'Misadventure' or "The Architects". Sometimes, it's because an enemy melee'd you, and you gently hit a wall, which resulted in all of your bones breaking at the same time; then there's other times when I'm just merrily walking along the surface of Venus, and then I violently explode out of nowhere. It's not fun* to be suddenly killed while trying to do "Do ______ without dying" bounties. (* = You'll rip your hair out)

Terraria -- Finding that a Corruption/Crimson biome is overlapping your jungle biome. The devs even made it so that the game's generation tries to avoid this, but it still seems to happen to me in every single world I make.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf -- Hoo boy. It's my favorite game, don't get me wrong, but let me just make this list...
  • Villagers giving me the task to hunt down another villager and give them something. Now I have this thing taking up my already limited inventory space, until I search the entire town for one person.
  • The "Get signatures for my petition" is even worse, since my one AC friend doesn't play anymore, so I keep the thing in my inventory the entire day, until it turns into scrap the next day. (To be honest, I don't remember if I can store it away, but I think I can't?? Dunno')
  • If you're like me, and you check up on every villager regularly (so they don't feel neglected), finding where that last one is hiding can be a headache sometimes .o.
  • Trying to do stuff in my home, then suddenly a villager comes over for a surprise visit. Urrgh.
  • Come to think of it, my villagers are the source of a lot of my problems. I love 'em to pieces, but URRGH.
  • Oh, and diving has its problems.
  • Persistent mosquitoes. They don't sell for enough to warrant me pulling out my net.
  • Sometimes, hunting down that 4th fossil is the worst thing ever.
  • I feel bad for complaining a lot about a game I love so much, so here's a positive: Decorating my house is a lot of fun! I really should make each room a furniture set for HHA points, but I love having a 'dream house', complete with a basement-arcade-gaming room. 0:

Well, that turned out a lot bigger than I expected. I'm so sorry my favorite games, I promise I love each and every one of you...

Fallout 2: Too many fourth wall breaks and pop culture references that ruin the atmosphere for players who realy care for the story of the game.o_O

Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy): There is a nonsensical sci fi plot twist near the end of the game that ruins the atmosphere for me.:(

Free Roam Racing games with STUPID AI, *sigh* it just bugs me when your cruising along at a high speed and then a AI driver decides to turn at the T intersection when he's on the other Fing side of the road and decides its a good fing time to break in the midpoint of the turn just so you can hit him at high speed and total your car (im looking at you Forza Horizon 1 &2 (haven't encounted it yet in 3), Need for Speed Rivials and Most Wanted (newer bad one), Burnout Paradise, GTA V (i know it's not a racing game but still), and lastly another non-racing game but Euro Truck Sim 2

Got Rocket Leauge. I always thought the rage about teammates are similar to the moba ones (We lost, and it's always the other 4 guys' fault), but holy cow, the amount of ragequits during a match is ridiculous. There seems to be no penalty, so in every match I see people constantly just disconnecting the second they get a goal.
