Most of my retro gaming nowadays comes from having an ancient laptop to play MS-DOS games on. I'm talking stuff like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom (the original!), and One Must Fall: 2097. Every now and again, I'll break out my Genesis (or Mega Drive, if you prefer) just for old time's sake.

Our NES broke a long time ago, and it still makes me sad. =(
Still have a SNES and a Genesis around here somewhere, but now I own most all of the games we had for those digitally.

I was raised on Excitebike, Kung Fu, Hogan's Alley, and too many others to list. Those were good times.

My siblings had a Colecovision before I was born, but I remember nothing of it.

I have a pretty old N64 somewhere in my house, with many games for it, maybe about 12 or so games. Had games like Pokemon Stadium, Pokemon Stadium 2, Pokemon Puzzle League, Diddy Kong Racing, Harvest Moon 64, Extreme G, and some others.

I still play my older consoles like N64, Gamecube, etc. I've also been playing some older PC games like the original Half Life, OG Counter Strike, Duke Nukem 3D, etc.

My dad bought an SNES when he was in the Army, so I always had that to play as a kid. Super Mario World was definitely my favorite, though I never beat it as kid (but I did find Star Road without a guide!). Then I came back to the game when I was like 17 and played through the whole thing; still a really great game! I also remember playing a bit of Killer Instinct and the Mario All-Stars collection; my cousin had Yoshi's Island and we would play that pretty often too.

Aside from that, the oldest thing I own I probably either a PS1 or a Gameboy (if we're counting handhelds).

I still have my NES, SNES and my Atari 2600. I also picked up a Sega Genesis model 1 on ebay a few years ago with a copy of one of my favorite games on the system, Landstalker. The only trouble these days is the price on old games is becoming outrageous.

My first console was a Colecovision; I still remember getting it for my birthday. I wish I still had it but it stopped working years ago.

The NES's in my house need refurbishing. If one worked, I would play Tetris and what not. Though most of my nostalgia comes from my N64.

I swear old Nintendo systems are unbreakable, every single one of my old Nintendo consoles still works to this day from my parents NES form the 80s to my Gameboy Micro that I must've dropped hundreds of times as a kid. I never actually owned a 16 bit console myself aside from playing a Genesis at a friend's house, I only had the NES until the PS1 came out so pretty much all my first experiences with video games until I was like 8 were all on 8-bit consoles

funny thing about that, during the Gulf War, they found an old Game Boy that'd been bombed and when they turned it on, it actually worked! it's in the Smithsonian if you want to check it out and here's a picture of it

I still have a snes and an old gameboy pocket, also had a couple floppys for DOS with jazzjackrabbit ,lemmings, keen, cosmos adventure ,earthworm jim , hocus pocus etc.pp , sadly they got lost though. Playing on the gameboy pocket nowadays makes me wonder how i actually managed to play on that screen as a kid xD ahyes... good old ghosting effect. Still an awesome device though, got it with pokemon yellow and megaman... n64 with smash bros. ( had one that got lost and rebought it with the game, rly miss the old games i had on it though) and zombies ate my neighbours, turtles in time,f-zero and w/e for the snes^^ I dont really have any real old console though... ive mostly grown up with MS-DOS and stuff like sokoban etc. . Ahyes and i have a playstation 1 , stillxD sadly it doesnt work too well anymore... but the controllers still are awesome :3 On the PSX i loved games like tekken obviously , the euro demos very genius in my eyes, and games like wargames, spacecop L.A.P.D ,crash bandicoot , command and conquer and all that good stuff. I even liked apocalypse and the fifth element x3 ahyes... childish innocence.

I play a lot of MS-DOS games as well. I have a collection of Pc games, that are for Windows and DOS. Granted, I can't play most of them, because there ancient. Unless there is a community fix (Like with Doom or Total Annihilation) I tend to focus on my DOS games instead.

As for liking the pain...Engadge has an event every February, called Four in February, where you have to finish four games within the Month of lewve? I was playing a game called Cybermercs, and oh my goodness gracious that one sucks on ice. It's a Diablo clone but with an aesthetic very similar to Aliens (So much so it's almost borderline copyright infringement) . If your on the lookout for paingames, then try to hunt down that one.

I've got a genesis, a game gear and a ps1 and ps2. Plus various nintendo handhelds that have been through hell and back (literal hell in one case - my dad took my old gameboy color with him to a war zone when he was in the army so he could play pokemon) though nowadays I just use various emulators for the convenience. -3-

I have my original Nintendo Gameboy (yes the original gray one(still works!)) and I also still have my family's first PC, a Tandy 2000 sc? I think. The PC used 5.25" floppy disks for both boot and storage MS-Dos 3.2 FTW!
I even bought a new in box Nintendo Gameboy Camera for my GB about 2 years ago but I never got around to making an interface cable to be able to print off the pictures from it.
Dos games were Nintendo hard before Nintendo was even a thing in the US, (Thexder anyone? look it up) I also had a centipede game that on "Superstar" speed when I was a kid racked up thousands of points, playing it at the ripe old age of 25 and I didn't even pass 100pts before dying three times. Fast doesn't even describe it.

(edit: Found a guy who played it on Youtube /watch?v=Tj4a4Gt7jqQ
Mind you he plays on the SLOWEST possible setting)

The only retro console I own is an SNES, which I have 3 games for: Super Mario World, Street Fighter 2, and TMNT4, Turtles in Time. It's not in the best shape I'll admit, but I don't think it's unplayable. I played it as recent as a year ago on my old TV, and haven't really tested it out again since.

In addition, I also has the cartridge for Super Mario Bros 2, but no NES to play it on, I don;t even know if it still works, I just found it randomly in my closet last year.

That's actually the game I always did the worst at on the SNES. Maybe it's just because I'm not good at beat em' ups, but I could never seem to get past the third stage, no matter how many times I tried.

I had an Amiga 500 plus when I was a wee lad. It's unfortunately long since dead, though I have very fond memories of some of its games and every now and then try to emulate something I vaguely recall from childhood with Dosbox.

I wonder, how old does a game have to be in order to be considered "retro" in this day and age. Anything released before Windows 95 sounds fair, I reckon? By that definition, some titles that come to mind:

Games I return to regularly:
- Doom and Doom 2
- One Must Fall 2097
- Worms 1
- Heroes of Might and Magic 1

Games I revisit once in a considerably longer while:
- Rick Dangerous
- Midnight Resistance
- Dizzy games (particularly Prince of the Yolkfolk and Magicland)
- Jazz Jackrabbit

Games I want to emulate at some point:
- Body Blows and Body Blows Galactic (my first fighting game experiences, woo!)
- Prince of Persia
- Wacky Wheels
- Golden Axe

Dunno about everyone else, but I consider a game retro if I can count the pixels without zooming in. =p

Addendum: Provided it's not a modern game that just happens to use a pixel art style of course.

I have many of retro systems and games that are tucked away in storage due to lack of space. Some of my first memories involve playing Super Mario Bros. on my mothers NES. I do feel in today's market it is a bit hard on the wallet to collect for retro systems, sure you can find some nice deals at yard sales like a very clean Chrono Trigger cart for $5 but I find that flea markets get picked clean by re sellers pretty fast.

I wonder, how old does a game have to be in order to be considered "retro" in this day and age.
I kinda feel like The Butt Zone's retro game board has it right set at 1999, end of the domination of 2D and the start of experimental 3D taking place right before the PS2 launched.

That time frame includes too many things that make me feel old if we start calling them retro. I refuse!
