No other Nuzlockes, then? Sadness. I was hoping to exchange stories. Tales of triumph and of loss.
Ah, I've actually nuzlocked Emerald myself. My team consisted of Swampert, Magneton, Cradily, Altaria, Sableye, and Camerupt.
I was really paranoid for my first run, I kind of just grinded on wild pokemon until I had at least 5-7 levels above them.
I lost one pokemon, an Aggron. I find it ironic, it had sturdy as its ability, and it got one shot by a counter from a Wobbuffet in the Trick House that was 10 levels lower than it. Oh 3rd gen mechanics, why did you ruin me so...

What's sad is that it didn't matter in the end. I played it on a really shady copy of emerald my little brother got and it turns out it deletes the save file when finishing off the Champion. So everyone technically died... At least I have a small video/picture of my team taken off my mobile phone. So I still have them in memory.

Did you nickname your pokemon? I did, and it kind of got me into nicknaming all of the Pokemon I got in every game onwards. Honestly, I don't think I was very creative but I nicknamed them Keepa, Emigine, Relish, Clause, Gemnii and Molivia respectively.
RIP

I started a Nuzlocke once, but it's not really for me. That particular game is now a solo-type run; I find those add a bit of challenge without restricting me too much. My solo-type runs so far are Emerald (grass team) and Soul Silver (fire team, I guess you could call this my 'failed' Nuzlocke). Haven't finished one yet though, I'm terrible for putting down a game one day then picking it up three years later and finishing it.

Magiana reminds me a lot of Diancie, and the whole 'created 500 years ago' backstory makes me think it's a legendary. It'll be interesting to see if it's intended to a 'Pokemon Z' legendary or the very first gen 7 Pokemon. I'm not the biggest fan of it's design but I tend towards more animal-based pokemon anyway, so it might just be bias.

I tried a Nuzlocke in a Randomized Emerald romhack. Had my team swept by a Dragon Jynx using thuderwave, leach seed and dragon tail just past the third gym. :>

One of my favorite moments in my Emerald Nuzlocke was when I got to use Shedinja for the first time. I just had it along for Flash, but then I came up against a trainer with a Lanturn, and the entire rest of my team was weak to either Water or Electric or was low on HP. I don't think my Shedinja had any good attacks on it, but Lanturn only had two moves for some reason, so it started Struggling in short order.

One of the worst was in the final battle with pokemon champ. He was down to his last pokemon, and we both had a Gyarados on the field. Both of us started Dragon Dancing. Twice. Next turn, mine went first and used Hyper Beam...and missed! Then his used Hyper Beam in return, and my Gyarados stood no chance. =(

Swampert and Camerupt...my Marshtomp was killed in a double battle at the second gym when both opponents focused all their attacks on him. Made me scared of doubles for the rest of the game. I had two Numels that died during training, so clearly I was not meant to have a Camerupt. I also had to go get a second Gyarados at one point because my first was killed by a *grumble, grumle* Wobbuffet, in a double battle no less. I should have gotten an Aggron at Victory Road, but I was too focused on training and forgot that I could catch a new pokemon there...

Did you nickname your pokemon? I did, and it kind of got me into nicknaming all of the Pokemon I got in every game onwards. Honestly, I don't think I was very creative but I nicknamed them Keepa, Emigine, Relish, Clause, Gemnii and Molivia respectively.

I most certainly nicknamed them, though the names varied greatly in creativity. Crobat was Vanessa (iono), Altaria was Melody (because of Sing and later Perish Song), Solrock was Helios (because sun, I guess), Armaldo was Xanthus (iono), Starmie was Stars (I guess I was feeling narcissistic), and Gyarados was Gilda (because fish). My fallen Marshtomp was Skipper, and he was supposed to go all the way to the league with me. =(

Wobbuffet, in a double battle no less.
I have a feeling it was the same Wobbuffet. It was also a double battle ;-; basically had both my Pokemon focus it and it survived. I thought that one day someone was going to die by type disadvantage(including Aggron at the time I had 4 Pokemon with 4x weaknesses).
To die by a counter like that, was just saddening...

Pokemon trainers in the psychic gym, per chance? I was able to confuse them sometimes by switching between physical and special attacks. For Gyarados, I had him use Dragon Dance a bunch before attacking...but just like in your case, the Wobbuffet survived the hit...

Huh, I guess they didn't even include data for that Pokemon in the latest games. Interesting.

Unless they somehow hid it especially well. Which would still be as interesting.
It's almost certainly a Gen VII mon. Not only would it be damn near impossible to patch in a new pokemon (due to the way Pokemon stores its files), it matches the patterns of EVERY pokemon generation and introduction.

Hm... Doesn't look like. As I said before, it was the in the trick house. I don't exactly remember which puzzle incarnation it was, I think Wobuffet just appears in other double battles. I guess they just like sadistically murdering others with their victim's power. :(

Oh hey Pokemon thread

I love Pokemon and also play competitively, used to hardcore competitive it up in VGC2014 and 2015 but currently on hiatus in 2016 because I took 1 month soft-resetting this stupid Yveltal and still not getting what I need, and seeing the meta become incredibly staler than what 2010 was, I think I'll just rejoin VGC when 2017 rolls around.

Favorite Pokemon is Absol, most beautiful Pokemon out there. I have a lot of Pokemon I really like, though.

Never did a Nuzlocke myself. I'm not THAT into Pokemon, and I don't generally like Permadeath type games.

Last one I played, Alpha Sapphire....I honestly don't really remember what my team was. Milotic was one of my standouts though (and rather cute besides <3) and she's specced out to be a recovery tank. I'll boot up the game just for this thread! I know I spent a fair bit of time doing the training with all my mains, so I went at least that far. Oh, and I hunted for the right nature and IVs for some of my party as well as ability. That was a bit of a pain.

Nearly 94 Hours played:
Rayquaza - Level 72 - Lonely Nature - Air Lock - Metronome
  • Extreme Speed
  • Dragon Pulse
  • Dragon Dance
  • Dragon Ascent
Steelwing (Skarmory) ♀ - Level 91 - Bashful - Keen Eye - Metal Coat
  • Roost
  • Night Slash
  • Steel Wing
  • Fly
Gardevoir ♀ - Level 92 - Serious - Synchronize - Gardevoirite
  • Moonblast
  • Psychic
  • Dream Eater
  • Hypnosis
MIlotic ♀ - Level 100 - Modest - Competitive - Wave Incense
  • Surf
  • Toxic
  • Ice Beam
  • Recover
Ninetails ♀ - Level 57 - Bold - Drought - Charcoal
  • Will o' Wisp
  • Flamethrower
  • Hex
  • Fire Blast
Garchomp ♀ - Level 86 - Impish - Rough Skin - Rocky Helmet
  • Dragon Claw
  • Earthquake
  • Stone Edge
  • Crunch
I also used a Sharpedo at one point, as well as Serpior (the one with the Contrary ability), Graveler (Geodude was my fave Rock/Ground type mainstay for generations. I really liked Magnitude and his ability to tank most physical attacks. From around beginning to middle of the game it's amusing to watch even higher level pokemon futilely try to scratch him with normal or other less effective physical attacks. He's level 67 here BTW. Sceptile (my starter) was another one that I kept using for a while. Kadabra was my old mainstay special attack psychic pokemon of choice. Replaced with Gardevoir, naturally. Seeing as I would need to trade him to evolve him, Gardevoir made more sense. Doesn't hurt that I find her more aesthetically pleasing. I used a Pelipper for a while. I used the Dress Up Pikachu for a while too.

I remember spending a lot of time getting the pre evolved forms of Ninetails and Garchomp so I could get the right nature, ability, and decent IVs. I might have given up on getting the right combination for one or more of them since it's just a pain and I'm not THAT dedicated. I have a bunch of Gibles, Feebas, and Vulpixes in storage for that hunt. I like the combo of Garchomp's Rocky Helmet and Rough skin. Takes off a decent amount of HP whenever an enemy used a physical attack on it. Ninetails' combination of Drought and Charcoal plus her nice fire moves made her really useful overall I think. She could generally survive a fight with a water type of similar level because it powers down water moves and Hex was alright on its own, but combined with Will o Wisp inflicting burn (or if the opponent already had a status condition) it does a fair bit of damage.

Oh, I have a Japanese Gardevoir stored. I'm guessing there was a reason I didn't use her, low IVs maybe?

But anyway, best pokemon is Dragonite, definitely. He deserves a Mega. A horrendously OP one at that.

As for the meta, VGC 2016 is looking really interesting. Allowing Legends looks like a bad move, but it could actually be fairly interesting if the teams are based around counterplay rather than Mega Rayquay and Primal Groudon spam.

It would've been fine if that was those were the only things running around... but the dominance of the two primals has made a certain painting dog become harder to stop that matches are starting to look more like coinflips rather than team management :/

After 6-7 weeks of egg hatching I finally got myself a shiny 6IV Rotom. So I'm giving away a Shiny Poochyena to the first 2 people who can answer the question right.

Q: How many Pokemons are weaker than Magikarp if based from their base stats. (PM me the answer)

EDIT: There only one Shiny Poochyena left

Anyone have thoughts on the new Pokemon that was just shown?
Looks cute to me, based on the design it looks like it rolls up into a shape that resembles a fancy pokeball - I'd imagine that probably has some plot relevance in whatever movie it's planned for. Type matching I'd assume would be steel fairy, which is a pretty scary combo all things considered

I know the feelings on gen VI's EV share are mixed, but I loved how it let you play through with lots of Pokemon on your team and not have them terribly underleveled. In Alpha Sapphire, I explored all the oceans with a side team of all aquatic Pokemon, just for the heck of it.

I've named a lot of my Pokemon after a particular naming scheme over the years - I wonder if anyone can guess what my system is? Here are some of the nicknames that I made using this very simple rule:

Thera (Galvantula)
Neo (Swellow)
Minea (Mienfoo)
Scuti (Scolipede)
Castan (Chesnaught)
Meso (Lucario)

First person to guess correctly gets a surprise : )

Not sure, but the only real correlation that I can find is that the names that end in a vowel sound also end with a vowel. Otherwise the exception like Chesnaught ends with a constant.
 There are other things like how I think Thera is based of of Thunder, Scuti is based of off Scuttle or Scolipede itself, Castan shares a C with Chesnaught and I have no idea what the pattern is between Lucario and and Neo as names.

Maybe its just that part of the nickname is based of off what a part of the real name sounds like. Eh, I think I'm stumped.

Those are some really good guesses! But not near the actual answer unfortunately : (

Very astute observation in noticing that the Pokemon's species names often have similarities to my nicknames - but the nicknames are not derived, or inspired, from the species names. Hope that helps : )

So gen 7 with Magiana or didn't we get the whole gen 6? The plot thickens. Anyway i can't name just one team since i have boxes full of EV trained Pokémon ready to battle. But my favorite team will always be my Mew joke team which i have to bring back since the team couldn't come to X version. My boyfriend had made that team for me so yeah i miss the battles. At least ORAS has the means to recreate those movesets thanks to a certain location that now instead of a certain route in XY keeps trainers hostage while trying to get loads of BP. I do use Bank for that but you gotta keep busy somehow when you did everything the post game had to offer. Anyway you may always pm me if you wanna exchange friendcodes for the games to have battles of any kind but single. Single battles aren't my favorite.

Do you think Magearna (English name for マギアナ/Magiana) is pronounced 'Mage-arna' or 'Ma-gear-na'? The latter is closer to how the Japanese name is pronounced.

Hey @TheTrainingDummy, since you were the only one to have a guess, you get the surprise : ) But first, what's your favourite Pokemon?

If anyone was curious, my Pokemon were named after the scientific classification of real-life animals that may have influenced their design.
Thera (Galvantula) is from the family Theraphosidae, which most tarantulas belong to.
Neo (Swellow) is from Hirundo neoxena, the welcome swallow.
Minea (Mienfoo) is from Mustela erminea, the stoat.
Scuti (Scolipede) if from Scutigeridae, a family of centipedes.
Castan (Chesnaught) is from Castanea, the genus name for chestnuts.
Meso (Lucario) is from Canis mesomelas, the black-backed jackal.

Most of my Pokemon from gen 5 onwards has a name using this system. I'll be honest, I didn't include Vulpes the Ninetales in the list because it would have made it far too easy to guess. I like how the system allows for multiple names for the same species of Pokemon - to a point. I've got Lucario called Adustus, Melas, Aureus.. no idea what to call the next one.

I've grown up with Pokemon. My very first video game was Pokemon Stadium, and that got me sucked into the sensation, which still persists today. While I haven't played Generations 4 or 5 all the way through, I can still safely say that I love the series with a passion.

I don't really battle competitively per-se, but I do battle with a competitive mindset--trying to train Pokemon so that they have the right stats and whatnot. When I play the actual games, I don't stress out as hard over it because the single-player is all I really end up doing. For Multiplayer, I just use Pokemon Showdown nowadays since it has infinite creative freedom. Well, almost infinite I suppose, since some abilities are banned due to not being officially available yet.

I've only created 25 teams so far, but I created them within the space of, like, two weeks. The ideas just wouldn't stop coming. I've actually had to consciously stop myself from making more because the one friend I have to battle against hasn't been able to keep up. I'm pretty sure I have at least 10 teams that I have yet to battle him with.

I guess this is coming off as bragging a little bit, but mostly I just can't shush up once I get going on a topic.

Oh whoops, sorry I'm a bit late responding to this. Anyway, I don't necessarily have a favorite pokemon, but I tend to like the Cyndaquil line purely for nostalgic reasons.

Anyway that's a pretty clever way of nicknaming your pokemon. Maybe it will help me nickname mine if I ever get back into Pokemon again. I tend to just name mine with many varying reasons, some of them obvious some of them not.
