I agree on one hand on Ash-Greninja but on the other hand, he gained many fans and they pretty much want that Pokémon. I will transfer him too in the end since the idea behind it is pretty cool. I kinda hope that other Pokémon will be explored for this battle bond ability. It be nice to have it on Pokémon that didn't receive megas like Meganium, Typhlosion and Feraligatr but we will see what Pokémon does in the (near) future.

I wonder if the Ash Greninja can use that golden-colored, shiny water shuriken that for some reason never hit the Charizard at the end. I'd like to know how much damage one would take getting hit by that.

European Volcanion codes also welcome here! The Dream Land store is just too far from here. I wish they had chosen Game Mania for this event -_-

Serebii has the details up too. I wonder if there are more Sun Moon pages though since it's only one at the moment.

No... he will not be a fossil. Remember: pokemons are not fossil only because resembles a real dinossaur. Chikorita line is a very good example

I wasn't thinking Dinosaurs, it just looks like it could be from ancient times like other fossil Pokémon. Chikorita, Bayleef and Meganium don't resemble Dinosaurs at all to me. I'm just curious about wether or not this gen will have fossils or skip them.

Jararanga's appearance reminds me of scale armour, making me think that it may be inspired by soldiers like ancient Romans or Samurai.

I can't think of any extinct animals that resemble Jangmo-o or it's evolutions - at least to the extent that previous fossil Pokemon have been, they're generally pretty blatant - but that doesn't mean there isn't one!

Fossil Pokémon don't always have to be based on animals that were real before they went extinct but we will see. We don't know the maximum number of new Pokémon yet.

Disclaimer: I am totally just doing this because I love Palaeontology : )

Omanyte is based off of an ammonite:

Kabuto
is based on both trilobites and their extant (still living) cousins horseshoe crabs:

Aerodactyl is some sort of pterosaur:

Lileep is a crinoid. There are still crinoids alive today but there used to be many, many more species hundreds of millions of years ago. And yes, they are animals!

Anorith is an Anomalocaris, my favourite animal from the Cambrian (and there are a lot of cool animals from the Cambrian - it was a really interesting Period):

Rampardos is a Pachycepalosaurus:

Bastodion is a Chasmosaurus:

Carracosta is an Archelon. These were the largest turtles discovered, up to four metres long:

(Continued due to img limit)

Archeops is based off of Archaeopteryx and its close(ish) relative Microraptor:

Tyrantrum is based off of Tyrannosaurus rex and similar dinosaurs like Cryolophosaurus. It's really neat that they included a feathered crest, as T. Rex may have had feathers! Feather imprints have been found on related species, and as more discoveries are made it's seeming more likely that T. Rex had them too. Palaeontologists are still figuring it all out.

And Aurorus's sails look pretty similar to those proposed to be on Amargasaurus' neck:

So yeah, every fossil Pokemon released so far has been a distinct analogue for a real-life extinct animal. Some non-fossil Pokemon also reference extinct animals, but the link is sometimes a lot looser. While that doesn't mean that future fossil Pokemon have to reference real life, I sure love that they've gone to the effort so far! It's such a neat bit of trivia : )

I have been into Dinosaurs and sea life my entire life and it's great to see i'm not the only one around. Though today i am more into marine life. Fun fact male Horseshoe Crabs are smaller than the females and hold on to the females lower back which can be mistaken for a baby hanging on to it's mother while they are actually mating. I saw the behavior at SeaWorld San Diego so they will have more Horseshoe Crabs in the future. It's indeed great for Pokémon to cover real extinct animals but mythical ones are great too since there are tales out there that shouldn't be forgotten either. A world without myths and legends becomes a bit more boring. I love myths and legends in Pokémon, can't wait to see and read which ones Alola has.

I'm more puzzled by Type Zero's 'evolution', given it unlocks that form when it finds a trainer with a good heart. Which I can only assume my 'skull rival' will either reform or give me his pokemon, or there's another one on Alola for me to catch and evolve after going into a series of battles. Also, Poison/Dark Muk for the win, though I'm hoping it'd grow a few heads due to the fact it can merge with other Muks.

I'm impressed, @Quid . You make an excelent briefing about the fossil pokemons!!

Your only mistake is about Lileep: it is based not from crinoids, but from a rare Dinomischus sp.

This ones resembles a flower, but are animals. Their month and anus are in the "face" of the flower. In the pokemon, the "petals" became the tentacles and the orifices became the eyes. Another curiosity: this ones are only found in the Burgess Shale area, the same only area who we find Anomalocaris, who be used to design the partner fossil of Lileep, Anorith.

@ShadowLightMew

A lot of "not fossil" pokemons resembles dinosaurs:

Chicorita, Bayleef and Meganiun, and Tropius are based in Sauropods:

Aggron are based in the Triceratops

Don't remember others now, but we already has a living fossil (Relicant) and the Yanmega can be easly be based in the giant dragonfly in the past (Meganeura)

@Metafogos Cool point about Lileep! I didn't know about Dinomischus.

This does remind me - I forgot to point out in my monster post that it's all possibilities, not certainties. The designers haven't come out and said exactly what their inspiration for each Pokemon was, so there's no way to know for sure! And I certainly haven't mentioned - or even know about - all the likely candidates.

I know my Dinosaurs, the Chikorita family just doesn't have the Sauropods look to me. Tropius gets much closer in comparison. They are more loosely based on them than anything.

American ones so not for me. Speaking of codes, is it possible to share one between 2 3DS systems through infrared? Started to wonder about it since my boyfriend doesn't have Volcanion yet.

@ShadowLightMew It's one code per game, unfortunately. At least you can trade the Volcanion itself over and back for the 'dex entry.

Meganium certainly takes more design liberties than fossil Pokemon, but its stance has always reminded me of a Brachiosaur with a short tail:

I am totally biased, though.

(It seems to me that having no tail to counterbalance the neck would create balance issues, but who cares? This is Pokemon, not Palaeo class)

Tropius has the same sloping back and stubby tail, but it's armour plates remind me of Titanosaurs, a sister clade to Brachiosaurs.

Guess i will have to get extra codes then. Still Dinosaur links or not, i see something else in the Chikorita family but they can do anything with a base and lots of imagination. I wonder if we get more Sun Moon stuff from Pokénchi today.

Hmm...regardless of what dinosaur it's based of, this dragon/fighting type is gonna be a pain in the neck to draw, especially for fan art, and to animate at a constant pace in the anime. Also, are there bees associated with fairies?

Chicorita line reminde me a cartoon sauropod (with a short tail).

I think they take the cartoon form to make the pokemon. Tropius is more like a "real" sauropod.

(Put "Cartoon Sauropod" in google and hit "images" to see. They are more like Bayleef and Meganium)
