Hopefully the Backers-only alternate character palette will be in a pack & that there will be more than one backers palette for each character (including future DLC characters).
Maybe Mane6 & Lauren Faust will let backers & maybe non-backers vote on some of their palette ideas for each character including future DLC characters.

Each fighter should have a palette that is an homage to a character of the same type from other games. Example: Velvet is all about keeping the foe at a bit of a distance. Peacock (Skullgirls) is all about keeping her distance and controlling her opponent's options by keeping them far away with her projectiles.

Yep, the $55 tier had a backers-only palette.
I wouldn't say it's punishing, more like "Hey, thanks for believing in us and putting a fairly large chunk of money down, here's an exclusive little thing as a thank you." A way of the devs showing their appreciation for the fact that you were part of the group that made it happen.

I'd understand that it may feel that way if it was something bigger than just a palette, though.

Actually, everyone at the $15 and higher tier will have access to one backer-only palette per character. The $55 tier gave some other aesthetic goodies.

If there were some other way to get the palettes, I wouldn't mind nearly as much. Backer-only palette DLC? But instead, the palettes (which, if the ideas the guys in this thread are throwing around are anything to go by, are really awesome) are eternally locked for anyone who doesn't use their credit card online (because they can't back the game) or arrives to the game late.

Going by how it was worded in the Indiegogo tier description, we should expect one backers-only alt palette for each character.

I think I read somewhere that backers will be able to share their goodies with others. But don't get your hopes up since I can't provide source.

Well, keep in mind that numbers of palette ideas mentioned around by fans =/= number of palettes in-game.

That said, I reckon it will be something alike Skullgirls. Each character has 25 palettes there, and it can be selected by either pressing start and circling through them with left-right, OR by pressing a button combination composed of 1-3 attacks that's assigned to that palette. The combination is displayed when you circle through them in the start menuone quickly memorises the button shortcut for his fav palettes.

Wouldn't that require acquiring the rights to use the colours? Or does copyright not work that way? I'd assume there'd be some sort of law toward using colours to purposefully look like another established character, and it's not like it would be too hard to figure out who the palettes were based off of.

As long as you're not making the character look physically like the character you're portraying, but rather just using the color scheme, it should be fine. Disney didn't invent the white/light blue color combination (though I'm sure they'd sue to prove otherwise). Besides, I saw some of the color palette options in Skullgirls. I can't help but doubt the creators of that game got the "license" to use the likenesses of all the characters whose color schemes they used, like King Dedede from Kirby and Fiona from Adventure Time.

Maybe the final boss in the game could have some alternate palette for each of the game modes (Story, Arcade, Time, score ect,ect) he/she/it is in?
If Mane 6 decides to do a voice pack DLC (similar to the Skullgirls 2nd Encore Voice Pack) in the future, maybe they could add some new palette that could complement the new voices?

As for backer exclusive vs non backer exclusive items (Digital & physical), this is my 2 pence.
The company (Gear For Breakfast) that's creating A Hat In Time game have stated that they could be making somemore of thier exclusive AHIT physical Kickstarter rewards for backers & non backers in the near future (A Hat in Time). As someone who didn't donate to the original A Hat In Time Kickstarter (I've bought the A Hat In Time Deluxe Edition for slacker backers) I hope this happens. There are some AHIT backers that want the physical items to be exclsive for the KS backers.
If I had backed A Hat In Time I wouldn't care if they wanted to sell their AHIT KS items to non backers as well. That money would more than likely go into future DLCs for the game, + any backers that didin't get any of the physical rewards in the original KS have another chance to get some of the items they missed the first time around.
The only issue would be for me if I was a backer is if they made the same physical items from the KS campaign and sold them at a cheaper price for people,but I could see a positive side to that if I was going to buy any of the items from them.

Comcept should have given all Mighty No.9 Beckers & Mighty No.9 Slacker Becker (I'm a Mighty Slacker Becker) the physical version of the game (including a physical version for XBox 360,PS3, PS Vita and the rest) free of charge or at a reduce price as a gesture of goodwill, as non backers can get the physical retal copy of MN9 cheaper than backers who donated to the physical MN9 game box tier.
I don't think Mighty Slacker Becker that help to fund Might No.9 new stretch goals even get their names in the MN.9 backer credits, which could be a good or a bad thing, depending on how you look at it.

Mane6 might sell some physical & digital TFH themed items that aren't exclusive to the Indiegogo campaign to the general public in the future once the game is out & they add a decent sized roster to it.

The problem with that one would be that if the characters have a lot of possible colors, cycling through that every time would be a chore.

Skullgirls had like 90% homages / references for the alt palettes and I always thought that was a bit silly. Every palette that's based on something else is a missed opportunity for the game to build it's own identity! Chances are the backers with the custom palette tiers will do references for days as is, no need to go crazy with them "by default" already. Especially not when they're so obscure people won't get them without a reference guide anyway!

Non reference palettes are easy to come up with, and references are funny. Those can be done quickly in-house by the guys without any extra ideas from us, unlike the easter-egg like palettes.

Personally, I think the backer's palette would be each character having the colour scheme of the Lawyer Friendly Equines character they started out as

I know there's been some debate whether there would be a Pony colour palette or not with the points each way being due to the production history (it would be a nice way to pay homage to the original project, but there is some concern whether it would be allowed and whether Them's Fighting Herds would be more closely scrutinized) but I think it would be alright if it were the backers palette. That way you could have it, but it wouldn't be in the default release that the developers would be gaining money from (yes we've still bought the game, but we've bought it by paying to have it made) and since most of the backers theoretically followed the earlier project it could work as a "Thank you for following us all this time" sort of thing
