My anime viewing has been down as of late, but of the things I have watched recently, One Punch Man, Attack on Titan, and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood were all great. For older stuff, if you'd like recommendations, I'd offer the following titles for your perusal:

Planetes -- Near future sci-fi, focused on Earth's efforts to slowly and realistically settle throughout the solar system. About as hard science as I've ever seen a future anime involving space be, and it pays off wonderfully well.
The Slayers -- Comedic fantasy series, 4 seasons of 26 episodes, that manages to sneak some good drama into all the laughs being tossed about.
Infinite Ryvius -- Sci-fi, future Earth (2200s), kind of a Lord of the Flies in space vibe. Pretty realistic look at social dynamics for what would happen if a couple hundred kids found themselves in charge of a spaceship and were being hunted by other spaceships.
And lastly, AzuManga Daioh -- One of the funniest animes I have ever watched. Follow six girls through high school, and find yourself laughing out loud several times each episode. No super powers, no magic, just great comedic timing with some silly dream sequences to mix things up a bit. If you only watch one anime on this list, make this the one you watch.

BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad. Really great anime about some high school kids and their rock band, and all kinds of various drama. It was really enjoyable to watch, and has one of the best dubs I've ever heard in an anime. It's a show I've recommend to everyone who asks me for a recommendation (except my one friend who despises animal cruelty, because there's a bit of a side story about one of the main character's dog and how he rescued it while it was being abused as a puppy)
There's also Higurashi, which I really need to re-watch one day. Like BECK, it was just a lot of fun and kept me gripped while trying to understand all the mysteries going on.
And Azumanga Daioh and Sgt. Frog just being hilarious.

I'm a huge fan of older anime's from the 70's and 80's.

Kinnikuman, Fist Of The North Star, Space Adventure Cobra, Saint Seiya, Captain Harlock, just to name a few. Real manly anime that grows manly beards on your MANLY FACE.

One of my faves is Hellsing Ultimate, if you've not seen it I have to say you should probably watch the original first then watch Ultimate. I tried watching the original after Ultimate and didn't like the differences between the characters, but after some time had passed I appreciated how the original went more in depth into plot points that were breezed over in Ultimate.
Although keeping up the vampire thing I've recently been watching Dance in the Vampire Bund and that's good. :)

Tsk tsk, I am ashamed of all of you. You all answered WRONG!

Next time someone asks you what is your favorite anime, your answer should be PAPRIKA!
That's on my to-watch list because of a recommendation, but I don't even know what this thing is. xp

Well I wasn't even considering anime movies! But I did love it. Exploring dreams is always fun. I've watched it like three times.

Oh man. Wolf Children became my favorite movie of all time right after I finished watching it. Another anime I've recommenced to everyone who asks me, and anything by the director, Mamoru Hosoda, is really good. Any of you who mentioned Summer Wars should look up his other movies, like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and his new film The Boy and The Beast. and The Persona 3 movies are also really good, but that's mostly because I love Persona 3. I can't quite think of any other anime movies, unfortunately.

I haven't heard of The Boy and The Beast, I'll have to check that out. I've loved everything he's done. Bought Wolf Children as soon as it came out.

If you're still not familiar with any of his works, Summer Wars is basically like part 3 of Digimon: The Movie in America or the third Digimon film in Japan, but with fully original characters. That's because the Digimon movie is one of the earliest things he worked on I believe, before a company decided to give him money to do his own thing.

And yes, Tokyo Godfathers is one of the best Christmas movies you'll find. Highly recommended.

There's also of course anything by Studio Ghibli, but most other movies I can think of right now are parts of series. The Utena movie (Even though I've never seen the series, couldn't get past the first few episodes), the Madoka Magicka movies, and the Gurren Lagann movies were all pretty good. Though only the Utena movie and the last Madoka movie weren't retellings of the anime.

Hmm, as for current shows I liked: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
But I'm more of a '90-early '10s fan, But most of what has been from that time frame I've seen.
I even had to make a spreadsheet to keep track of what I've seen before
Moviewise: Cowboy Bebop, Appleseed 2004, and Summer Wars, plus most anything Ghibli.
I'll stop here so I don't end up listing everything :D

Currently following Pokémon XY&Z in Japanese and wondering if we get new seasons on some anime. Next to the obvious one, my favorites are Higurashi, Nanatsu No Umi No Tico, Wolf's Rain, Sailor Moon original uncut anime, Hamtaro original uncut anime, Chi's Sweet Home & Chi's New Address, Vampire Knight + Guilty, Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, Ginga Densetsu Weed, Elfen Lied, Arashi No Yoru Ni, all of Jungle Emperor Leo aka Kimba The White Lion, No Game No Life etc. I grew up with anime and anime movies like the ones from Studio Ghibli.

your dreams.
I think my favorite anime so far has to be Kill La Kill.

As for the current winter season, I've been keeping up with Myriad Colors, Dimension W, and ERASED. Erased is definitely the strongest anime of the winter season, and you can literally see the animation budget. Hopefully this turns into a classic to remember.

Dimension W I think is fairly good, I initially thought it would turn out to be just an anime "built" to be popular but lack actual substance, but it's turning out pretty good actually.

Myriad Colors is okay. As long as you don't take it seriously it's pretty funny, but I don't like it as much as I do some other harem anime, notably Is it wrong to try to pick up girls in a dungeon? and To Love-Ru.

That's the second recommendation I've seen for Erased. I'll have to give it a look see.

Ok so I have to change my opinion. GATE is probably my favorite anime right now. Watching magic fantasy warriors get destroyed by modern day military forces just makes me all giddy and excited!

I'm loving Gate so far (though I'm a couple episodes behind). My only quibble is that basically nothing so far has posed any difficulty for the Japanese military except for that one dragon, so I'm not even entirely sure what the conflict is ultimately supposed to be. xp

Im on the same boat, I don't really see any REAL threat to the Japanese army as they have pretty much shown a single guy can just wreck a group of soldiers without breaking a sweat.

I woudl expect some magic users to at least posse a threat to the Japanese army, but we will have to see, especially after EP 18 seems things will get interesting.

Out of the series I've finished, it's a toss up between Gurren Lagann, Eureka Seven (which I actually bought on Blu-Ray) and Kill la Kill. Out of the series I need to get back to, it's a toss up between Trigun and One-Punch Man.

your dreams.
This spring season has a ton of great anime. Tanaka-kun is always listless has been an enjoyable slice of life thus far, while Re: Zero is developing a very interesting plot.

The most notable anime of this season is definitely Kiznaiver, though. The intro is amazing and studio trigger is definitely keeping up in their quality.

Not sure if this thread got necroposted, but since we're here, I might as well list some more recent favorites of mine:
Angel Beats
Planetarian

Yeah, I don't really follow the current anime news unless something seriously interests me, which Planetarian definitely did.

Is, has always been, and will always be Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. The Wing series specifically.

Aside from that, Dragon Ball Z, Tenchi Muyo!, Ronin Warriors, Outlaw Star, Digimon Adventure 01, Gurren Lagann, Ginga Densetsu Weed, Wolf's Rain, and Inuyasha.

If they can be counted for varying reasons, Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Sky, Sherlock Hound, Wakfu, and Avatar the Last Airbender

and don't forget JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Sure, it gave rise to a ton of memes, but that doesn't mean its not a good show.

Let's go with an old but gold one: Cowboy Bebop.
Aside from that, I don't really have anything considered a favourite.
